If you break both legs don't come running to me.

« on: June 11, 2009, 08:50:18 AM »

This years Iowa State Fair Parade is on August 12th at 6:15pm. The IA4WDC has been in this parade for the last 2 years and this is the largest parade in Iowa (according to the Iowa State fair site). We usually have 12-15 vehicles enter but I am going to list 20 for this year (running 2 rows side by side). Line up is usually around 5:30pm in a parking lot near the capital. We cannot hand out/throw candy at this parade.

Let me know if anyone has questions,
Coleman

I think we should look into buying bulk candy.  Anyone have cosco membership?  Aside from that you can get a LOT of hard candy at a dollar general.  They run $1.00/5 lb bag and they seem to have quite a bit of it.

We cannot throw candy at this one. I have a CostCo membership so I will check into candy prices sometime for the other parades.

A parade without candy throwing!?  What type of communist operation is that!?  You might as well cancel the firetrucks and the Shriners in their tiny cars!  No candy at a parade.. ppppfffttt!!

I wish I didn't have a Costco membership. I might as well just hand them $100-200 just when I walk in the door every other week. Makes me sick every time they push a membership upgrade and tell me how much I spend there each year.  Shocked

For the parade I am in at the moment.

Umm. I screwed up. The Grimes parade was yesterday. This town does some goofy things sometimes. Maybe we can do it next year...

You mean the Grimes 4th of July Parade was YESTERDAY on JUNE 13!?  Good grief.. That's about as bad as Wal-Mart selling Valentines stuff the day after Christmas.  Maybe all of this "do it early" will eventually get so far 'ahead' that it will actually be 'on time'.

Their "funtastic day" is the event I was thinking of last year, only problem it is not on the 4th of July like I thought...  I will keep this straight for next year, it would be a good one to attend, small town with a lot of people = good new exposure in my opinion.

Yes, I think the club needs to look at other towns parades and attend with some Jeeps.  I can think of Waukee, Boone, and Ames.

The VEISHEA parade in Ames would be a good one for the club next April.  I (hopefully) won't be around then, but it usually gets good exposure in the area as it's the first 'decent weather' event in central Iowa.

There's also the Pufferbilly Days parade in Boone in September.  The more visibility the better, I would say.

I think I will be in or around Okoboji for the 4th this year, but the State Fair Parade sounds like fun.

IMHO, the key to the parade circuit is to try to have varying degrees of 'build' within the lineup - have some really tricked out rigs like Bill and Jim, etc. as well as bone-stockers and everything in between so you appeal to the greatest number of people.  Maybe have the stockers up front, and slowly 'build' to the 'big rigs' in back. I know that I am still amazed at what some of the stockers can do, and I would think if there is a variety of builds maybe people would think that their stock Jeep can do it too.

Just got off the phone with West Des Moines park & recreation.  They are going to limit us to 6 rigs this year, deadline for application is Friday.  Did anyone else receive some information on this?  I am glad I called to see what was up.

Here is the information:
Route start at 39th and Ashworth, head east, south on Vine to 4th Street, south on 4th Street and conclude at Maple.

July 3rd, lineup begins at 5:15pm, parade starts 6:30pm

Must be decorated for the event, candy is allowed, highly recommended that walkers throw the candy instead of vehicles.  Water guns are not allowed...

Looks like registration is free so I'll get it sent off to them in a few mins.

We can approve an amount for candy at the meeting tonight and I can pick it up. I cannot be in this parade but will just get with someone who is to get the candy to the 6 people that do go.
